Crypt Thing - Rotational Slumping (Vinyl) (2011)

LA's Living Tapes continue their forays into vinyl with a
cracking debut LP by Crypt Thing. Hailing from the
slightly unlikely location of Truro, Cornwall, UK, Crypt
Thing has a distinguished line in warped boogie and
synth-funk that probably wouldn't sound out of place at
the Bowgie (legendary Cornish home of the earliest Rephlex
parties). 'Rotational Slumping' bears resemblances with a
whole host of artists, from the ambiguous and
introspective pop of Silk Flowers, John Maus and Autre Ne
Veut, right through to the slyly danceable Rephlex stock
of Cylob, DMX Krew and to an extent AFX, all tied together
with a slanted yet deadpan melodic touch. It comprises 15
relatively short vignettes including some longer numbers
and song structures benefitting from vocals by Disaro's
Raw Moans. Over the A-side we're tripping over shards of
Hi-NRG electro and dipping to fairground funk melodies and
smudged acid before arriving at the murky electro-soul of
'John Holmes', featuring a distant and mottled Raw Moans
sounding like Ariel Pink trapped in a lucid dream.
Flipside those vocals are revealed more fully as a paler
version of Autre Ne Veut on 'You've Got Mail', before
spilling into the Linn-funk of 'Angle's Delight' and more.
We're really feeling this...
