Yage - The Woodlands Of Old (2008)

Another Future Sound Of London spin-off that is so heavily influenced by 1970s prog rock
that some tracks are practically a tribute to it.
It's a really impressive development of the FSOL sound- complex live drumming and broken
beats, electronic atmospherics, and virtuoso live instrumentation, all melded together with
an immense production talent into a really strong, consistent album. You can't help but be
impressed.

Unlike the other recent spin-off Amorphous Androgynous, this is an instrumental album, and
quite a lot darker than "Peppermint Tree".

Occasionally it sounds quite a lot like Future Sound of London. In other places I end up
thinking it sounds like "dark jazz". I've made that term up but I think it really fits- it's
got that freeform jazz approach, but the overall sound is moodier, sinister, evil. The
woodlands in the album's title were obviously quite scary, if this is what they sounded
like.
